MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS (MVA)

  • Soft tissue damage occurs when muscles, ligaments, or tendons are stretched and torn. A tear in a muscle or ligament is called a sprain, while a tear in a tendon is called a strain. These soft tissue injuries may occur anywhere in the body, but are most common in the neck, shoulder, thigh, or groin, and may cause muscle spasms, swelling, and pain.

A collision can also cause whiplash in the neck, which occurs when the neck is forced forward and backward or side to side, damaging soft tissues, joints, and bones. A mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) may also occur if the brain moves violently inside the skull, damaging brain tissue and cells. Symptoms of a mild TBI include fatigue, nausea, dizziness, headache, confusion, and ringing in the ears.

  • Other common motor vehicle accident injuries include:

    • Fractured finger, arm, or leg

    • Crush injury that damages the bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments

    • Fractured ankles, feet, and toes

    • Hip fracture, dislocation, or tendonitis

    • Torn rotator cuff and shoulder injury

    • Herniated disc and facet joint injury

    • Neck or skull fracture

    • Chest injuries caused by the seat belt

    • Stomach injury, such as internal bleeding, organ compression, and organ rupture

    • Severe TBI

    • Spinal cord injury and paralysis

    • Nerve damage in the neck, back, and arm

    • Disfiguring facial injury caused by lacerations or burns

    • Limb loss and amputation

Though some injuries are visible immediately after the accident, some injuries can only be detected through proper medical examination. This is why it’s so important to visit a doctor as soon as possible.
